Born again in 2021

Here are a few simple areas in your life where you should begin to set goals again.

Begin again in 2021

Last year was full of unexpected challenges. Our way of life has shifted as a result in more ways than one. The truth is, as we navigate these changes, many of us have lost our confidence along the way, unable to make plans for the future, our goals quietly sitting in quarantine unsure of when they can emerge.
There is much we have had to adjust to over the past year. However, humans are adaptable and primed to face and overcome challenges. As we enter into a new year, take this opportunity to regroup, letting go of the ‘what ifs’. Instead, start afresh, setting new intentions for the year ahead.
Crisis often brings clarity.  Consider how the turn of events last year may have given you a greater awareness of your priorities. Let these become the focus for you now in 2021.
Setting goals, being optimistic about the way forward and having things to look forward to, is not only a positive approach to life, but actually essential in times of uncertainly as it helps to anchor us into the here and now, while giving us hope as we look to the future. So, where to begin? Figure out what’s important to you to help decide your priorities. Then simply choose a few carefully selected goals for the year to work toward.

Here are a few simple areas in your life where you should begin to set goals again

Financial goals:

No matter what 2020 threw at you in regards to earnings and assets, let 2021 be the year you get back on track working toward healthy finances. Everyone has their own unique financial situation and many Australians were affected by the upheaval of 2020. Perhaps a change of circumstance means reassessing priorities.

  • Budgeting - How you can simplify your spending this year? Consider only buying what you actually need in 2021. Make considered rather than compulsive purchases and budget for them. Establish a solid savings strategy for the year with a simple budget to follow and allocate a percentage of your income toward either paying off debt or building up savings. Did you know Sydney Mutual has a budgeting service or handy budgeting calculator that can help you with this?
  • Investments - If buying a house has been on your to do list, 2021 may well be the year to take steps to making that dream a reality. With working from home on the rise, interest rates at an all time low and a number of Government incentives and schemes running, the conditions are right to help you get into your new home earlier.

Personal goals:

  • Health - There’s nothing like a global health crisis to give you a kick up the bum and force you to consider your own health and wellbeing. If it wasn’t already, your immunity and emotional wellbeing should be a major priority in 2021. Keep your mind and body operating at optimal levels aiming to weave more movement, healthy foods and mindfulness into your days.
  • Joy - Looking forward to simple daily pleasures is a wonderful way to get you from morning to evening with a spring in your step. A daily cuppa under your favourite tree, a puzzle with your kids, a walk around the block, reading a chapter of a book before bed, soaking in a bath with some bubbles. Little self-care practices to nourish and restore your energy levels and nervous system. We are bombarded with so much information on a daily basis, not all of it positive or uplifting. Unplugging from this onslaught gives us more spaciousness and serenity, allowing us to enjoy the little things in life.
  • Travel - Don’t forget to schedule some time away from home too in 2021. Whether it be weekends away in small country towns, camping under the stars or a beach holiday. You might not be stepping on an international flight any time soon, but you can still adventure and expand your horizons while supporting the local economy at the same time.

Working toward goals invites personal growth, focus and motivation for you now, with the achieved goal a reward in itself and a gift for the future you. Keep a list of your goals somewhere you can easily see them, and make sure you celebrate any goals you do achieve as the year unfolds.
