Understanding the different types of scams

Scams can come in many forms, but all are designed to get hold of your money.

Be aware of the following, so that you are less likely to fall victim to a scam:

Be immediately sceptical of anything advertised through social media, as these are very popular platforms for scammers
If you are unsure of the legitimacy of a person or business, search for them online to find their business details. Never call them back on the number they have given
If an offer seems too good to be true, assume it’s a scam
If you do not fully understand an offer, request, or demand presented to you by a third party, contact us before proceeding
Regularly checking your account statements or account using the Banking App or Internet Banking will help you track your transactions. If you spot any unusual activity, make sure to call us.

Remember, we will never call or email asking for your account details or your log in details for Phone, Mobile or Internet Banking.

The best way to avoid scams is to understand the different type and ways scammers will try and trick you out of your personal information, money or goods.

Types of common Scams:

Email Scam – email scams are the most common way fraudsters trick you into handing over your personal or financial information
Online Shopping scams – These scams involve fraudsters pretending to be legitimate online sellers, either with fake websites or fake ads on social media
False billing – Scammers will request you or your business to pay fake invoices for common supplies, advertising, directory listings that you didn’t order
SMS Scams – Fraudsters send text messages to try and trick you into giving away your personal information
Scams over the phone – Fraudsters try to convince you they’re from a trusted organisation to gain access to your computer.
